Sun Conures (Aratinga solstitialis) are now catergorised as an endangered parrot in the wild and it appears to be true that there are as many or even more in captivity than in some parts of their native lands where they used to flourish in their 1000s. Primarily located in North East Brazil and in parts of Venezuela according to World Parrot Trust there are just 1000 to 2500 Sun Conures in the wild.
In 2008 Sun Conures were listed as Endangered by the IUCN Red List. Many have been trapped and sold off as pets or have lost habitat because of deforestation.
We here at The Parrot Zoo have created a program to encourage zoos to take hold of this fabulous species and educate people as to its status in the wild in order to hopefully assist before it becomes too late. Every penny raised from this program will go directly towards the monies already sent to The World Parrot Trust by The Parrot Zoo.
Please help even if it’s only £1 it will go towards the £1000 we intend to raise.
The Parrot Zoo is attempting to assist Flamingo Land who has been actively involved in flamingo conservation for quite some time and has funded various conservation activities in Africa.
One of these projects is Kamfers Dam in South Africa.
They started piling the pennies as a focal point for our latest fund raising effort. They are looking to raise a minimum of £3,000 for the construction of a covered walkway and hide on Kamfers dam.
This will hopefully be the start of introducing eco-tourism to this very important wetlands where between 20,000 and 50,000 flamingos can be seen at close quarters without the risk of any disturbance to the birds themselves.
It will also prove very useful for researchers and professional observers to collect the data which until now has been impossible to attain due to the inhospitable areas where flamingos normally choose to bread.
Once they have reached the top of the pole with pennies they will hold a fund raising evening in order to boost their fund raising capacity.
