The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (www.iucn.org) monitors the world's plants and animals monitoring which are threatened and endangered. The present day's figures show a staggering 23% of all mammals and 11% of birds fall into these categories.
Well the role of a good zoo is to assist where possible in the conservation of all flora and fauna both worldwide and here at home in the UK.
The Parrot Zoo is committed to assisting these needs wherever possible, being involved in projects from as close as our own back garden in the Ivanvale Nature Reserve to as far away as Madagascar situated on the Southeast coast of Africa, considered by scientists worldwide to be a high priority for conservation efforts both for its high degree of endemism (number of species found nowhere else) and its sheer number of living species
Unfortunately, virtually all of Madagascar's native species are threatened with extinction as deforestation proceeds at an alarming rate. Madagascar is a poor nation struggling to improve the quality of life for its rapidly growing human population. At the same time, they are struggling to find a way to preserve the forests and wildlife that remain. They need help!!
