The Green winged macaw averages 90cm in length. Both adults dark red in general; green middle wing coverts, scapulars and tertiary feathers; back, rump and tail coverts blue; blue tail with red tips. Upper mandible horn in colour with black on sides; lower bill grey/black. Cere bare and face white with evident red lines of feathers.

Can be very noisy, but not so lively as other large macaw species. Soon become accustomed to keeper. Very hard chewers so provide regular supply of thick branches and stumps. Hardy once acclimatized and can be kept with other macaws. Enjoys bathing in summer or being sprayed in outside flight.
